An open letter to Councillor Sam Chapman-Allen

An open letter to request suspension of the Breckland Council's support for the Flagship Housing regeneration scheme for the Abbey Estate in Thetford.
open letter

Dear Sam,
May we begin by congratulating you on your re-election as Conservative Group Leader and no doubt soon to be re-elected as Leader of Breckland Council, given the Conservative group maintained control of the Council at the election.

As the Breckland Councillors representing the eight Breckland Council seats in Thetford, we wanted to immediately write and request that you suspend Breckland Council’s support for the Flagship Housing regeneration scheme for the Abbey Estate in Thetford.

We stood collectively on a manifesto that did not support the proposals in their current form and, as such, we have a clear mandate to request that Breckland Council suspend its support.

Residents made clear to us during the campaign they thought the addition of hundreds of new homes was not appropriate, particularly when they would be taking up so much of the highly valued green spaces.

Residents believe the compulsory purchase of so many properties would shatter the strong community spirit that exists, forcing people out of their homes against their wishes.

Equally, those we spoke with did not feel their voices had been heard during the consultation and do not feel that they have been adequately allowed to shape the proposals for their community.

As their elected representatives, we support them.

The Abbey Estate deserves much-needed investment, but these proposals are wrong and are not welcome.

Chairman, we have all seen the decline of our high streets - both locally and nationally. It is important that we all recognise the value of these spaces economically, culturally, and recreationally.
