5th December 2022
As the temperatures drop and Christmas approaches, the current cost of living crisis is really starting to bite for many. Thetford residents are feeling the pinch, with reports of increased usage of local foodbanks and demand surging for other local charities. These concerns prompted one local Councillor in Thetford to dust off his quiz sheets and put on a Christmas themed quiz to raise money for his local community.
Thetford Labour Councillor Stuart Terry hosted the sell-out quiz last Friday (2nd December 2022), with all profits raised going towards providing a free two-course Christmas meal for the local community on 20th December. The quiz was a great success with more than 100 people packed into the Centre’s main hall, raising more than £800 from ticket sales and a raffle.
The Engine Room at the Charles Burrell Centre on Staniforth Road in Thetford offers a free two course dinner every Tuesday from 5pm until 6.30pm with around 75 people joining in each week. But on Tuesday 20th December there will be an extra special meal thanks to Stuart’s fundraising.
Councillor Stuart Terry said: “I’ve seen for myself how busy the Community Dinners are as local Labour Councillors hold our surgeries at the same venue. I wanted to do my bit to raise some funds to put on a special Christmas meal in December for the whole community and spread a bit of festive cheer during what can be a difficult time for many. I am delighted with the success of the quiz that raised enough funds for this Christmas dinner to go ahead”.
The following local businesses and organisations have been thanked for their support with the event: Team-C, Chilterns Ltd, Thetford Garden Centre, About Thetford Magazine, Charles Burrell Centre, Tesco, the Mulberry Thetford, High Lodge, Thetford Forest – Forestry England, Designs on Print and Leaping Hare.
The Community Dinners take place every Tuesday at the Charles Burrell Centre form 5pm – 6.30pm. Anyone wanting to attend the Christmas community dinner needs to pre-book.
