A long-standing political stalwart from Thetford has been presented with a certificate of recognition for her many years of dedicated service to residents and her local Labour Party.
Thelma Paines served as a Town, District and County Councillor for more than three decades, having first been elected in the 1980’s. She went on to become a Chairman of both Breckland Council and Norfolk County Council. As well as her Councillor duties, she also served as the Secretary to Thetford Labour Party branch for much of that time.
Members of the local Labour Party gathered on Saturday (30th July 2022) for their annual Summer social event. As part of the proceedings on the day, a certificate of recognition was presented to Mrs Paines by Daniel Zeichner, Labour MP for nearby Cambridge.
Daniel said: “Political parties rely on the dedication of hard-working volunteers just like Thelma. She has given many years of service in a variety of roles and it is so important that this dedication is recognised and celebrated. I am very pleased to be able to present this certificate to her and thank her on behalf of colleagues”.
Thelma added: “I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a Councillor. I really wanted to give something back to Thetford as someone that came as part of the London overspill – Thetford people were so welcoming to myself and my family and that motivated me to serve as their Councillor over so many years”
Terry Jermy, Labour County Councillor for the Thetford West division on Norfolk County Council said” “Thelma was one of the reasons that I first got involved in politics as I saw first hand her dedication and support for local residents. She first represented Thetford West before I was even born and for me to now represent the seat that she held for so long is indeed an honour”.
