Barry moved from Devon to Thetford in 2019. Since moving here, Barry has enjoyed becoming active within the local community, including volunteering at the Burrell Shop.
He believes that facilities of this nature are of great benefit to the community and should be supported whenever possible.
Barry served as a firefighter in the London Fire Brigade for 30 years. This gave him good knowledge and understanding of the varied communities he served. Barry’s wife was a primary school teacher and Barry used to help out at the school by running the school football team. He also organised visits to his fire station for the children in order for them to learn about fire safety and the firefighters role in the general community. He was also active on the school’s Parent / Teacher Association (PTA).
On retiring he worked part time in a care home for 10 years. Working closely with the residents, he developed his understanding of their vulnerabilities and their needs.
Barry said” “When we moved to Thetford I wanted to play an active part in the local Labour Party. I soon realised that the Labour Party in Thetford was working for the benefit and wellbeing of everyone in Thetford. I felt I needed to be a part of its efforts. As a newcomer I realised the potential of this great town. In its ancient history Thetford was an extremely important place in East Anglia. It is my hope that by working together as a community we can help return the town to its former glory”.
